EuropeAid , under the programme "Aid for poverty diseases (HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis) in developing countries" is funding a project from AEDES Foundation.
Artepal is part of this project supported since the beginning of 2005 by the European Union Commission and aims to promote the use of Artemisinin Based Combination Therapies (ACTs). Other components look into the use of ACTs for pregnant womenand the extension of ACT treatment coverage through home based treatment.
Artepal's major component is the transfer of technology in order to reinforce local production capacity mostly in Africa and Asia.
This is an innovative project whose objectives are to sustain national policies to fight malaria and, in the long term, to improve access to quality ACTs and reduce prices. It aims at supporting several companies with Technical Assistance in developing countries through North-South and South-South co-operation.
Together with OTECI , it works at increasing the capacity of professionals through on-the-job training. This task includes the various components of ACT production: culture ao artemisia annua and drying of the leaves; extraction of artemisinin; chemical transformation into an artemisinin derivative; manufacturing of a finished product to be used in various combinations
The project is supervised by a Scientific and Technical Committee
